Before After

"Journey" Carpetbag

I turned this plain white canvas satchel into a wonderful overnight bag by coloring it, embellishing it, and adding a lining with a handy pocket. I daubed the canvas with two shades of blue Dynaflow fabric paint and sponged the vinyl bottom of the bag with two metallic colors of Lumiere. The sides were embellished with iron-on transfers of retro travel stickers. Other words (also made with iron-on transfers) were applied to painted scraps of canvas and then riveted or wired on. I embellished the other side of the bag with stenciled eucalyptus leaves, transferred Kanji characters, old Chinese coins, and gold watch chain. The result? This bag makes a splash wherever I travel.

Come Into My Garden

I turned the spare Japanese aesthetic of this purse on its head by covering it with lavish rows of Lauren Brooks's bright multi-fiber ribbon-rose trim in orange, pink and purple. I used a big silver belt buckle I picked up secondhand as the centerpiece for the front of the bag. To top it off, I stitched a vine of green fabric-leaf trim around the shoulder strap and added small clusters of green velvet rose leaves where the strap meets the bag. Now I'm ready for a midnight rendezvous in the garden.

Vintage Mesh Makeover

This quick makeover combines two things I love. First, there's the bag made of silver-metal mesh, that lovely, shiny, gleaming material so popular decades ago for evening bags. Second, there's the amazing color change brought about by using a cotton ball to dab on ink from StazOn ink pads by Tsukineko. This ink is permanent on metal. Even so, once it's dry I like to seal it with Envirotex Spray Sealant. As a color scheme, I chose the green, pink, and nearly clear tones of my favorite kind of crystal: watermelon tourmaline.
