20 Kinds of Stores & the Treasures You Can Find

Here's a design tip: Once you get your treasures home, find a way to display them. Seeing them will help give you ideas about how you might use them on a shoe. Most of the time I buy trims and other embellishments before I have any idea what I’ll do with them. If I put them in a drawer, I forget I have them. If I leave them out where I’ll see them in the course of my day, it’s amazing how quickly they become elements of a new design.

Antique stores

Vintage buttons, chains, earrings, shoe clips, charms, old coins. (Caution: there’s a lot of great stuff in antique stores—pendants, brooches, old medals, and the like—but unless there are two of them, or you’re willing to use different embellishments on your left and right shoes, you’ll have to pass them up.)
